Although fiercely proud, there is a profound sadness to this carving. Look at the eyes. They tell the story. In June 1876, Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians had triumphed over Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. This warrior realizes that although they won the battle, they have lost the war. Within two years the tribes of the northern plains would be forced on to government reservations and the way of life they knew would be gone forever. An original design, chainsaw slabbed out of native New Jersey butternut, band sawed and hand carved. Finished with gel varnish, home made stains and liquid wax. 17" h
