HANK WILLIAMS  2012

"Just another guy on the Lost Highway..."

Lost Highway Carving is the name of the web site that houses the cyber home of my artwork. The name comes from a song written by blind musician Leon Payne in 1948, and made famous by Hank Williams. Hiram King Williams, a.k.a. Hank Williams sits at the top of my list..., always will.

This is a relief, something I generally do not carve. My other reliefs are stylized, while the point of this is to be realistic. Essentially I am working from a 1949 black and white studio photograph and trying to trick the viewer into thinking it is three dimensional. The wood is 3" thick bass wood, 13" h by 10" w. I intended to purchase a piece of wood 2" thick, but Jerry, the owner of the American Woodcarving School, talked me into the thicker piece. I am glad he did. Everything you see is carved in only the top two inches of the wood slab. All the depth and dimension comes from shadow and shading. It is finished in tinted linseed oil, clear coat and liquid wax.

This carving is gift for my son who built the web site for me and is also a big Hank, Hank Jr. and Hank III fan. He has placed It on his bar, among his ever changing collection of bourbon and whiskey. It is nice to know Hank has found a new home among old friends.
