KIT CARSON, PATHFINDER  2024

This carving is based upon a 1922 painting by Gerald Cassidy (1869-1934). This iconic canvas was commissioned by the railroad to promote tourism in the Southwest. The piece stands 17 inches tall as do my other full figure carvings. The pattern is drawn from an art magazine picture, band sawed and hand carved.

On one of our trips to the Southwest we visited the home of Kit Carson in Taos, New Mexico. He is an interesting figure in the exploration and opening of the American west.

This basswood carving is finished in boiled linseed oil, slightly colored with oils and liquid wax. The fur hat and some of the fringe on his buckskin outfit have been textured and colored via pyrography (wood burning) techniques, a new addition to my finishing process for carving projects.
