CUSTER  2009

The story of the 7th Cavalry and the Battle of the Little Big Horn is well known. Custer's command was wiped out by Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in Montana on June 25, 1876. This portrayal of George Armstrong Custer is from an 1865 photograph taken near the end of the Civil War. At the age of 23 he was promoted to the brevet rank of Brigadier General. The "boy general" fought in many encounters during the Civil War, including Gettysburg in 1863. Custer always led from the front of the attack. He had eleven horses shot under him in battle during the Civil War. This is hand carved basswood, oiled, and "painted" with acrylic water base washes, clear coat and wax. 14" h X 9" w
